The Paralympics
The Paralympic Games is the equivalent to the Olympic Games for athletes with disabilities. The Paralympics are held every 4 years, in conjunction with the Summer Olympics and dates back to London 1948 when a sports competition was held for World War II veterans with injuries. The first Paralympics which allowed competitors from all walks of life were in Rome 1960. There is also a Winter Paralympics competition held alongside the Winter Olympic Games that has been running since 1976.
The Youth Olympics
The Youth Olympics is the equivalent to the Olympic Games for athletes aged between 14 and 18. The Youth Olympics was first envisaged in 2001, and the first event will be a Summer competition in 2010, to be held in Singapore. The Youth Olympics will run every 2 years and swap between the Summer and Winter games accordingly. The Youth Olympics will be held in independent cities and not in sync with the existing Olympics or Paralympics Games.
The Great British Olympic Team
Great Britain is the only country to have won a gold medal in every Summer Olympic competition since its inception in 1986. The most golds won by the UK team is 56, achieved in 1908. In London 2012 the Great British Olympic Team hope to break this record and finish the competition as medal leaders.
